influence of saccadic adaptation on spatial localization comparison of verbal and pointing reports

Under conditions of short-term saccadic adaptation, stimuli presented long before saccadic onset are perceptually mislocalized in space. Here we study whether saccadic adaptation can also affect localization of objects by pointing. We measured localization performance during fixation and after normal saccades and adapted saccades, for a bar presented well before a saccadic eye movement, for both pointing and verbal localization, under open-loop conditions generated by a transient dark period about 300 ms after the presentation of the bar. During fixation and normal saccade, localization performance for verbal report was veridical, while for pointing there was an overestimation of the target eccentricity respect to gaze, in agreement with the idea of separate representations of space for action and perception. During saccadic adaptation, there was a significant shift of both pointing and verbal report localization in the direction of adaptation with similar spatial selectivity for both tasks. These results indicate that saccadic adaptation induces a similar re-calibration of the action map as well as of the perceptual map, suggesting a common site of operation in the transformation from eye-centered to gaze-centered coordinates

    Contrast Gain Shapes Visual Time

Traditionally time perception has been considered the product of a central, generic, cognitive mechanism. However, evidence is emerging for a distributive system with modality-specific sensory components (Morrone et al., 2005; Johnston et al., 2006). Here we show that fast contrast adaptation, which can be observed in the retina, induces a change in apparent duration. The perceived duration of a subsecond interval containing a 50% luminance contrast drifting pattern is compressed when it follows a high (90%) as compared to a low (10%) contrast interval. The duration effect cannot be attributed to changes in latency at onset relative to offset, can be dissociated from the effect of contrast context on apparent speed or apparent contrast per se and it occurs in a retinocentric frame of reference. The temporal compression is limited to high drift temporal frequencies (≥10 Hz) and is not observed for equiluminant chromatic stimuli. This pattern of results indicates a major role for the magnocellular pathway in the neural encoding and representation of visual time

Inconsistency and correction of the german amortization system

    Get PDF
The amortization systems, also called as amortization methods, are used to compute the installment value that a client must disburse (or spend) to pay off a loan or financing with the number of installments and the interest rate agreed for the loan or financing. This paper shows that the German Amortization System makes an inconsistent use of the interest paid in advance in its definition and generates an effective interest rate higher than the contracted, which makes this system abusive and unfair to the clients. In this article, two forms of correcting the German Amortization System are also proposed, making the effective interest rate equals to the contractual interest rate39339340

Semitransparent Perovskite Solar Cells for Building Integration and Tandem Photovoltaics: Design Strategies and Challenges

    Get PDF
Over the past decade, halide perovskite systems have captured widespread attention among researchers since their exceptional photovoltaic (PV) performance was disclosed. The unique combination of optoelectronic properties and solution processability shown by these materials has enabled perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to reach efficiencies higher than 25% at low fabrication costs. Moreover, PSCs display enormous potential for modern unconventional PV applications, since they can be made lightweight, semitransparent (ST), and/or flexible by means of appropriate design strategies. In particular, by enabling transparency and high efficiency simultaneously, ST-PSCs hold great promise for future versatile utilization in the context of building-integrated PVs (BIPVs) or as top cells to be coupled with conventional lower-bandgap bottom cells in tandem PV devices. The present Review wants to provide a detailed overview of latest research about ST-PSCs for BIPVs and tandems, by critically reporting on the most updated and effective design strategies in view of these two possible future applications. The differences and similarities between the available approaches are punctually highlighted, emphasizing the importance of a rigorous application-orientated ST-PSC design. Last but not least, the main challenges and issues about device design, operation, and stability that need to be addressed before commercialization are thoroughly scanned

    Artificial Biosystems by Printing Biology

    Get PDF
The continuous progress of printing technologies over the past 20 years has fueled the development of a plethora of applications in materials sciences, flexible electronics, and biotechnologies. More recently, printing methodologies have started up to explore the world of Artificial Biology, offering new paradigms in the direct assembly of Artificial Biosystems (small condensates, compartments, networks, tissues, and organs) by mimicking the result of the evolution of living systems and also by redesigning natural biological systems, taking inspiration from them. This recent progress is reported in terms of a new field here defined as Printing Biology, resulting from the intersection between the field of printing and the bottom up Synthetic Biology. Printing Biology explores new approaches for the reconfigurable assembly of designed life-like or life-inspired structures. This work presents this emerging field, highlighting its main features, i.e., printing methodologies (from 2D to 3D), molecular ink properties, deposition mechanisms, and finally the applications and future challenges. Printing Biology is expected to show a growing impact on the development of biotechnology and life-inspired fabrication

Inferring comparative advantage via entropy maximization

We revise the procedure proposed by Balassa to infer comparative advantage, which is a standard tool, in Economics, to analyze specialization (of countries, regions, etc.). Balassa's approach compares the export of a product for each country with what would be expected from a benchmark based on the total volumes of countries and products flows. Based on results in the literature, we show that the implementation of Balassa's idea generates a bias: the prescription of the maximum likelihood used to calculate the parameters of the benchmark model conflicts with the model's definition. Moreover, Balassa's approach does not implement any statistical validation. Hence, we propose an alternative procedure to overcome such a limitation, based upon the framework of entropy maximisation and implementing a proper test of hypothesis: the `key products' of a country are, now, the ones whose production is significantly larger than expected, under a null-model constraining the same amount of information employed by Balassa's approach. What we found is that countries diversification is always observed, regardless of the strictness of the validation procedure. Besides, the ranking of countries' fitness is only partially affected by the details of the validation scheme employed for the analysis while large differences are found to affect the rankings of products Complexities. The routine for implementing the entropy-based filtering procedures employed here is freely available through the official Python Package Index PyPI

Chaotic-Integrable Transition in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model.

Quantum chaos is one of the distinctive features of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, N Majorana fermions in 0+1 dimensions with infinite-range two-body interactions, which is attracting a lot of interest as a toy model for holography. Here we show analytically and numerically that a generalized SYK model with an additional one-body infinite-range random interaction, which is a relevant perturbation in the infrared, is still quantum chaotic and retains most of its holographic features for a fixed value of the perturbation and sufficiently high temperature. However, a chaotic-integrable transition, characterized by the vanishing of the Lyapunov exponent and spectral correlations given by Poisson statistics, occurs at a temperature that depends on the strength of the perturbation. We speculate about the gravity dual of this transition

Boosting the Performance of One-Step Solution-Processed Perovskite Solar Cells Using a Natural Monoterpene Alcohol as a Green Solvent Additive

The perovskite film is the core of a perovskite solar cell (PSC), and its quality is crucial for the performance of such devices. The morphology, crystallinity, and surface coverage of the perovskite layer greatly affect the power conversion efficiency (PCE), hysteresis, and long-term stability of PSCs. The incorporation of appropriate solvent additives in the perovskite precursor solution is an effective strategy to control the film morphology and reduce the defects and grain boundaries. However, the commonly used solvent additives are environmentally harmful and highly toxic. In this work, α-terpineol (a nontoxic, eco-friendly, and low-cost monoterpene alcohol) is employed for the first time as an alternative green solvent additive to improve the quality of one-step solution-processed CH3NH3PbI3–xClx films and to restrain nonradiative recombination in the corresponding devices. An in-depth investigation of the physicochemical effects induced by such a high-boiling-point, polar protic solvent when incorporated into a conventional perovskite solvent system is provided. The collected data demonstrate that the addition of a precise amount of α-terpineol can generate uniform and highly crystalline perovskite films with improved photovoltaic performances. Through this approach, the PCE of planar n–i–p PSCs is boosted up to 17.5% (against 16.1% of the top control device) with reduced hysteresis and enhanced ambient stability
